Summer Landscaping Checklist to Maintain Your Yard

When spring start up is over, summer landscape maintenance season begins. Summer is a time of maintenance including trimming hedges and shrubs, refreshing mulch, lawn care upkeep, and overall keeping your property looking great. Our summer landscaping checklist can help you stay organized and make sure you know what needs done.


Summer is defined from the months of June through the end of August. Your lawn and landscaping has different needs during this time. For example, cool season grasses like most yards in Pennsylvania are just hanging out and waiting for the cooler weather. Whereas shrubs and other landscaping plants will be growing and require on-going maintenance.

Summer Landscaping Checklist for Pennsylvania

In general, you landscaping needs care during the summer months. Its hot and the last thing on your mind may be landscaping maintenance. Your landscaping professional can be key. You can schedule all the maintenance you need to keep your curb appeal top-notch.
  1. Layer and Refresh Mulch - Mulch starts to look run down from the high skies and summer heat. A fresh layer of mulch will keep your garden beds free of weeds, plants happy and healthy, and your landscaping looking nice. Check out our article on the top 3 asked questions about mulch.
  2. Maintain Mowing and Edging - Keep mowing and edging your lawn. As the heat dries out your lawn, its more important to consult a lawn care professional to make sure your are mowing and maintaining correctly to keep your lawn healthy.
  3. Trim Hedges and Shrubs - Unlike cool season grasses, hedges and shrubs will grow all summer long. Periodically trimming these plants in your landscaping will keep them maintained and looking their best.
  4. Control Warm Season Weeds - Summer brings with it a new set of weeds to control. Hot weather makes crabgrass and other weeds invade your lawn. Mowing and edging mentioned in #2 above helps but often more robust weed control is needed to ensure your lawn is not overrun with weeds.
  5. Soil Testing - Summer is another good time to run soil tests. Soil tests in summer will give you a summary of what fertilizer and/or lime treatments you may need to schedule for fall.
