Soggy Weather Lawn Care Tips for the Homeowner

LAWN CARE TIPS | LAWN MAINTENANCE
The last thing you want to hear at this point is more rain in the forecast. This spring has been much of the same as the last six months, more and more wet weather. Rain soaked yards have become the new norm. As a homeowner, it can be challenging to care for your yard when it is always wet. Rain is great for the grass during the spring, but it prevents you from keeping your normal lawn care routine. How can you mow and maintain a healthy yard that is always wet? Here are our lawn care tips for keeping a lush and healthy yard during prolonged wet weather.

Anytime there is standing water or your grass stays consistently wet, mowing can harm your lawn. Wet grass is heavier than dry grass. Clippings not only get clumped up under your mower deck when you mow, but they also cause damaging and unsightly deposits in your yard.

3 Weekly Lawn Care Tips for Wet Grass

With the amount of rain that has soaked just about every yard over the last few months, many homeowners can throw their lawn care plan right out the window. The rain is definitely helping your grass grow, however, many of your weekly spring lawn care steps have to be completed with caution.
  1. Avoid mowing wet grass - It is hard to do when it rains everyday, but mowing wet grass can cause more harm than good. It is better to let it grow taller than cut it when it is soaked. Mowing yourself or paying for lawn service when your yard is wet will cause compaction, ruts, and can stress further grass growth.
  2. Stay off of rain soaked yards - Similarly to mowing, walking or using a soggy lawn can kill grass by pulling out unstable roots and increased traffic can cause compaction. Wait at least 2 days after hard rains to use your yard like normal.
  3. Clean up any debris from flooded areas - One of the most important lawn care tips that many homeowners neglect to do is to clean up after major rain events. Low spots and any flooded areas can often collect debris such as leaves and old grass clippings. Not cleaning up will leave you with dead spots that will require additional spring lawn care steps to correct.

Long-term Lawn Care Tips for Soaked Lawns

Your weekly lawn care routine under wet conditions maintains your yard throughout the season, but over the long-term there are a few more lawn care tips to consider.
  • Improve drainage - If your yard has areas where water pools when it rains, use a dry stretch to fill in areas or divert water flow. A good lawn service will be able to help you craft a plan to help with water drainage and save your grass long-term.
  • Aerate lawns regularly - The benefits of aerating your lawn also include helping it stay healthy before and after damp conditions. Aeration will improve drainage and allow your yard to breathe more effectively during wet conditions.
  • Ask for professional assistance - A lawn service professional may be able to help maintain your yard from season to season. Besides being able to provide many different lawn care services, they can develop a plan to get through wet spells and keep your lawn beautiful and healthy.
Perfect lawn secrets rarely are shared between homeowners and especially not by professional lawn service providers. Although these lawn care tips are not necessarily industry or individual secrets, they will save your lawn as you battle wet weather this year.
