6 Most Commonly Asked Lawn Care Questions
Have a lawn care question? If you do, we probably have the answer for it below. These are the top 6 lawn care questions we get asked all the time.
1. How High Should My Grass Be Cut?
Here in Pennsylvania, most lawns are some variety (or mix) of cool-season grasses. Our recommendations for cutting length of the more common varieties are:
2. Should I Mow Every Week?
Yes, mowing your lawn once a week is recommended for two reasons. First, mowing each week will reduce weeds in your lawn, and second, regular mowing will keep your grass healthy and vigorous.
3. How Do I Control Weeds in My Yard?
Two types of weeds are problematic for homeowners. Broadleaf (i.e. dandelions) and grassy (i.e. crabgrass) weeds pop up during different times throughout the growing season. Although your local home improvement store carries many products to treat weeds, it is best to consult with a professional to control weeds in your grass.
4. Do I Need to Test My Soil?
A soil test should be done each year. The test will allow you or your lawn care professional to determine exactly how much fertilizer to incorporate. This saves you time and money and also prevents over fertilizing your lawn.
5. When Should I Aerate My Lawn?
Aerating your lawn is best done when it is growing. You want your lawn to be able to recover quickly from aeration. Spring is a good time to aerate, however, we see the best aeration results when it is done in the fall. If you want to learn more, check out our article on lawn aeration.
6. Best Time to Dethatch My Yard?
Dethatching removes the organic matter from your lawn that has not broken down yet. It helps your grass breathe and utilize nutrients more effectively. Similar to aeration, dethatching a lawn is most successful during the spring or early fall.
Hopefully our answers to these lawn care questions are helpful. Look for more questions and answers to be added to our FAQ page in the near future.
