Common Fall Landscaping Mistakes Homeowners Make

FALL LAWN CARE | LAWN CARE TIPS
Whether you choose to have a professional maintain your lawn and landscaping or your do it yourself, mistakes can happen. These are the most common (and most important) fall landscaping mistakes to avoid.

Fall is a busy time. School starts back up if you have kids and the weather is changing making it challenging to sometimes get everything done. What ends up happening is fall landscaping projects get delayed or not completed at all. Not good if you want a pristine lawn the following spring. The best way to ensure everything is done and done right is to have landscaping services schedule. Either way, you need to make sure these fall landscaping mistakes are avoided.

4 Common Fall Landscaping Mistakes

Fall gives you opportunities to get a lot of landscaping tasks complete. However, certain tasks should be avoided this time of year. An example of which is pruning shrubs. Here are the other big mistakes many homeowners make.

Fall Landscaping Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Not picking up all your leaves - Leaving leaves on your lawn or landscaping during winter prevents airflow and can cause vegetation to suffocate. It also contributes to snow mold that can kill grass and landscaping plants.
  2. Forgetting to aerate your grass - Fall is an ideal time to aerate your lawn. Weeds are mostly gone, which can thrive in a newly aerated lawn, and the soil and grass benefits more from fall aeration as winter dominancy approaches.
  3. Not protecting newly planted trees - If you have planted any trees this year, you should protect them from winter. High snow and ice levels can damage these trees. In addition, small mammals and other animals love to chew the bark or eat the buds during winter when other food sources are limited.
  4. Storing lawn care equipment without cleaning it - Your tools such as rakes, shovels, and particularly your mower need to be cared for properly before winter. Clean all tools and store them out of the weather to avoid rust and damage. For your mower, make sure the deck is cleaned out and use a fuel stabilizer so it is ready to cut in spring.
There are many more fall landscaping mistakes homeowners make than these four. Although if you can take care of these, you will be ahead of the curve come spring. We are all busy so always remember to reach our to your local landscaping professional to schedule fall service and these mistakes will take care of themselves.
