End of Season Mower Maintenance Tips

Mower Maintenance Tips You Should Be Doing Now

MOWER MAINTENANCE | FALL LAWN CARE
Many homeowners struggle with the end of the season. There is a lot to do in your yard for one and also most are not experts in equipment maintenance. A commonly asked question we receive is what all is involved when you talk about mower maintenance?

Gas-powered lawn mowers and trimmers take their share of abuse during the warm months, so some mower maintenance at the end of the season is critical to keeping them running great. Replacing oil, spark plugs, and air filters on mowers and cleaning old grass from the mower decks should all be part of your lawn mower maintenance checklist. Moreover, removing and sharpening your mower blades will give you a head start in the spring.

5 Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips Todo Before Winter

No matter what kind of mower you may have, these five mower maintenance activities are critical to keeping you mower running and operating smoothing.
  1. Get rid of the gas. Gas today is full of additives, which are hard to avoid. These additives play havoc on small engines. Start by adding a fuel stabilizer to your gas tank. Next run the mower until all the gas is gone and it shuts off. This will clean all your lines and prevent your carburetor from gumming up over winter.
  2. Remove the blade. You will need gloves and the correct socket wrench. Removing the blade allows you to have it sharpen and ready for cutting starting in the spring.
  3. Drain the oil. If your mower or other lawn care equipment is a 4-cycle engine you need to drain and change the oil. For winter lawn mower maintenance, drain the old oil now and add new in the spring. Just remember to add oil!
  4. Clear the deck. Fall lawn care is much tougher on lawn care equipment because you are mowing over leaves and other fall debris. Number four on your lawn mower maintenance checklist should be clean away all the stuck on grass and dirt under your mower. Use a plastic putty knife to scrape off the mower deck clean. Doing so will prevent rust and keep your mower performing optimally.
  5. Change out the guts. Mowers run great when they are properly maintained. Doing so means replacing the guts each year. By guts we mean the air filter and spark plugs. New spark plugs will ensure a fast start and a new air filter will get clean air to the engine to improve fuel use.
End of the season maintenance is much the same regardless of whether you are performing push lawn mower maintenance or riding lawn mower maintenance. The trick is actually taking time to do the mower maintenance. To conclude, lawn mower maintenance is an important end of the season task. Use these five tips above to keep your mowers running great year in and year out.
